Principal's Address
As Term 3 draws to a close, we reflect on an exciting and productive term filled with remarkable achievements across academics, arts, and sports. It has been a time of growth, celebration, and community spirit, showcasing the talents and dedication of our students, staff, and families.
Academic Excellence
Term 3 has seen our students excel in various academic pursuits, with outstanding results in both classroom assessments and external competitions. A special congratulations goes to our Year 12 students, who have demonstrated resilience and commitment as they prepare for their final exams. The recent Mock Exams were a true testament to their hard work, and we are confident they will continue to strive for excellence in Term 4.
Additionally, we expanded our annual STEM FEST competition to include local primary schools.
Year 9 and 10 students completed their all-important Senior Education Training Plan interviews. These interviews map out a student’s progression through the senior phase of education. Deception Bay SHS provides three district pathways for students – Academic ATAR – pure academic subject focussed on university, Tertiary – for students interested in some academic subjects and a possible University pathway and Work Ready – for students who enjoy hands on learning and may be interested in an apprenticeship or traineeship.
Artistic Achievements
The creative talents of our students have shone brightly this term, with several artistic events that left a lasting impression on our school community. We had the unveiling of a new mural depicting the value of belonging
In the performing arts, our dance students participated in Dance Ed at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre. This event was a collaboration between industry professionals and schools to produce a fabulous evening of dance. Additionally, the annual Dance Night was also held this term – 29 high quality acts contributed to a fun and entertaining evening.
Sporting Success
On the sports field, Term 3 has been a season of triumph and teamwork.
Our Volleyball Development teams contested the Gold Coast Schools competition and made it through to the bronze medal match. Additionally, our rugby league teams qualified for three grand finals – Year 7 Boys, Year 8 Boys and Open Girls, with Deception Bay triumphant in the Year 8 and Open Girls final.
As we move into the final term of the year, we encourage all students to keep up the momentum, continue striving for their personal best, and support one another as we approach the end of the school year.
We wish all our students, staff, and families a restful and enjoyable break. Let's return refreshed and ready to finish the year on a high note!
Visual Arts Excursion to GOMA
Our Visual Art students had an unforgettable day exploring an exhibition by world-renowned Dutch fashion designer, Iris van Herpen. The show, a stunning blend of fashion, art, and science, featured sculptural pieces suspended from the ceiling and walls, leaving our students in awe. They also photographed the vibrant surroundings of the Cultural Precinct and enjoyed the journey into the city. The inspiration drawn from van Herpen’s work will fuel their next creative assessment, and we can't wait to see the innovative projects they produce!

Year 10 Physics Dreamworld Excursion Returns!
In Week 5, our Year 10 Physics students went on an exciting and educational excursion to Dreamworld. They explored the physics behind some of the park's most exhilarating rides. Armed with data collection tools, students gathered crucial information, all in preparation for their Term 3 Physics Student Experiment Assessment.
The day was packed with hands-on learning as students witnessed theoretical concepts come to life in a dynamic, real-world environment. From calculating forces and energy transformations on roller coasters to examining motion and acceleration on rides, the excursion offered an immersive experience that extended far beyond the classroom.
Having this valuable excursion back on the calendar was a thrilling opportunity for both students and staff. Not only did it enhance students' understanding of core physics principles, but it also provided them with a unique and unforgettable learning experience.
We anticipate the insightful experiments and analysis that our students will produce as a result of this exciting day.

Visual Arts Local Art at Caboolture Regional Art Gallery Excursion
Recently, a group of our students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery, where they explored an exhibition by local artist Chantal Fraser. Drawing inspiration from her Samoan culture and family, Chantal guided the students through her work, sharing the stories behind several pieces.
The excursion didn’t stop there! Our students also participated in a hands-on with a screen-printing workshop led by another local artist, Mark (aka Deathpress). They printed tote bags featuring Mark’s designs, enjoying the creative processes. The combination of Chantal Fraser’s inspiring exhibition and the interactive art-making session with Mark made the day a memorable and enriching experience.

STEM Fest 2024
STEM Fest 2024 is well and truly underway, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! The excitement began in Week 1 with the STEM Fest Teacher Launch, where we welcomed teachers from participating schools to kick off the event.
Thanks to the generous support of QUT, our major sponsor, we hosted the STEM Fest Workshop Days on Tuesday and Friday of Week 5. The event saw participation from students representing seven schools, who eagerly engaged in two dynamic workshops led by QUT STEM Ambassadors.
Our teachers also unveiled the 2024 STEM Fest project topics, sparking curiosity and creativity as students began the initial research and brainstorming phase of their inquiry projects. The workshops were a fantastic opportunity for students to dive deep into STEM, collaborate with peers, and start shaping their projects for the festival.
But wait, there’s more! The excitement doesn’t stop here. Mrs Pearce, Ms Clark and Mrs McTainsh will be working closely with the Deception Bay SHS, STEM Fest team as they prepare their inquiry projects for the Showcase Evening. We are also thrilled to announce that, for the first time ever, we will be hosting the STEM Fest Junior Challenge Day with Deception Bay SS, Deception Bay North SS, and Moreton Downs SS on Tuesday of Week 10. Expanding STEM Fest into the primary realm has been a long-term goal, and it is incredible to see this finally come to life!
Students from all 12 schools, both primary and high school, will return on Thursday of Week 3, Term 4 for the highly anticipated STEM Fest Showcase Evening. On this night, they will present their work in a “Science Fair” style event, competing for Year Level Prizes (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) as well as the prestigious Innovation and Champion School awards.
Activities like these, take a lot or organisation and would not happen without the team of helpers behind the scenes and to everyone involved in the STEM activities! Our aim in running these activities will expose our students to meaningful real-world science experiences to help inspire them learn about and understand the world around them. We are grateful to be able to provide these opportunities to our students and to other schools.
We are eagerly look forward to all the amazing projects and discoveries that will be showcased. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this exciting journey into STEM education!
Year 11s Embody Aspiration: A Term of Exploration and Achievement
This term, our Year 11 students have truly embodied our school value of ASPIRATION – ‘we aim high.’ They have explored post-schooling options, gained real-world experience, and are diligently preparing for upcoming assessments, including external exams. For some, this term has also been about stepping up as they apply for 2025 leadership positions.
At the start of the term, a group of our senior students took an exciting trip to UniSC Moreton Bay at Petrie. Traveling by train, they explored the campus and got a taste of university life, learning about the various study options available after high school.
Both our childcare and hospitality students have been out in the field, participating in work experience. This hands-on opportunity allowed them to discover more about their chosen industries, with some students thriving so much that they have already been offered employment!
Back at school, alongside their regular curriculum work, many students have shown incredible aspiration by applying for 2025 leadership positions. Congratulations to all our nominees—your drive and ambition are inspiring. We wish you the best of luck and eagerly await the announcement of these results!
As we look forward to Term 4, we’re excited to celebrate all our achievements, both academic and sporting, at our Senior Awards Night. This will be a memorable evening, reflecting the hard work and high aspirations of our Year 11s.

Ice Bath Challenge
The Australian School of Entrepreneurship (ASE) Group has partnered with Movember to run mental health workshops for young men across the country. ASE covers education, entrepreneurship and employment programs for students aged 5 to 24 years. Movember and ASE are hoping to find out more about the ‘lived experiences’ of young men’s mental health through these workshops and are on a mission to change the face of men’s mental health.
A group of Year 9 and Year 10 young men from our school had the opportunity today to be a part of this challenge. The students challenged and supported each other during a variety of activities and then participated in an ice bath immersion.
Huge thanks to the ASE Group and to the students and Year Level Leaders who took part today. Such a timely workshop for R U OK day, as well.
