Term 3 has seen a positive and very productive beginning. Students and staff have quickly re-established a focus on learning to support student outcomes through classroom norms and expectations along with high quality curriculum and pedagogy.

These outstanding results are directly as a result of initiatives such as the “Curriculum Clarity” project and the commitment and professionalism of staff to work in partnership with students to achieve the best result possible.
Students at Deception Bay SHS have the benefit of having the support of “Bump it up walls” (BIUW) to help clarify what is required to achieve a successful result for them. A Facebook video provided some insight into the BIUWs and how they assist students. Additionally, a comprehensive Case Management system of tracking student progress and intervention where required ensures our students are well supported.
Facilities news
The new Health Precinct building, and staff carpark are progressing well, with both projects taking shape as the photos below illustrate.
The Deception Bay SHS School Opinion Survey is now open, responses can be entered until 16th August. Your opinions matter, and we want to hear them! Please take a moment to complete this quick survey and share your thoughts. An email was sent on the 22nd July to all parent/caregivers. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our school, creating a positive and nurturing educational experience for everyone. The more Parents/Carers voices we hear, the better our school can become. To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2024. Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Finally, this term will see a number of important information sessions for carers and students at all year levels. Our Junior Secondary Expo will provide important information for prospective year 7 parents, whilst year 9 and 10 students will be completing their SET plans that will provide important pathways guidance into the senior years.
Year 8 updates
Our Year 8 classes have been back on monitoring booklets this term. Each class are working towards class targets and as a cohort, working to decrease the number of behaviour incidents for the term. The class who has shown the most improvement at the end of the term will receive a reward. Congratulations to 8A who were the winning class for Term 2.
General reminders:
Uniform
- Non-school jumpers are not permitted under any circumstances. Non-school jumpers will be confiscated to the office if worn.
- Undershirts are not permitted under the general or formal uniform shirts.
- Monday - full formal uniform (shirt, pants/skirt, tie, black shoes). Students are not permitted to wear the school tracksuit pants, however can wear plain black dress pants on Monday.
- If your child is not wearing their formal uniform for any reason, please provide them with a note or contact the school. Students will be issued with a uniform detention if they do not have a uniform pass.
If you require any assistance with purchasing new uniforms or a school jumper, please reach out to myself or Kate Allen.
Learning Equipment
Students are required to bring a bag every day, with a pencil case, school diary, books and phone pouch with their phone locked inside. This ensures students are prepared for learning every day, every lesson.
Attendance
Our school attendance goal is 90%+ and we encourage students to aim high.
If your child is absent, please contact the school in the morning or respond to the absenteeism text so that your child's absence is accounted for.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops by local Brisbane industry experts and worked incredibly well together. Highlights included the scavenger hunt, great food, team bonding, the sunrise beach walk and working in their ensembles. Thanks to all the students and teachers involved with making this a memorable experience.

Nudgee Beach Year 9 Excursion
During Week 2, Year 9 Science students visited the Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre.
This excursion was directly related to their Year 9 assessment for the term, providing students with a hands-on learning experience about mangroves, local ecosystems, and environmental impacts. Activities included a boardwalk in the mangroves, fishing, data collection, and yabby pumping. The day concluded with an educational session about carpet pythons, where students had the opportunity to pet the snake!
All students behaved exceptionally well, showed respect, and represented the school admirably with genuine curiosity.

Celebrating NAIDOC 2024
Keep the Fire Burning – Blak, Loud and Proud was the theme of NAIDOC this year. Our school community was treated to a loud and proud display of Aboriginal Culture at our whole school assembly with Uncle Kerry leading our Deadly Dancers. In addition to the Welcome dance, students performed the Fire Dance; Aboriginal culture is alive and celebrated at our school.
Members of our school community addressed the whole school assembly and gave us insights into their interpretation of the NAIDOC theme. The school also engaged in Learning for Life (LFL) lessons to explore the theme and the significance and importance of NAIDOC to Australian society. Aunty Yvonne, Yvett, Raymond, Isabella and Tachan were awarded DBay NAIDOC Awards for their achievement and contributions to our school to Keep the Fire Burning.
The painted tote bags with the theme emblazoned on them were a real hit with the students; most students took their bags home. Thanks to Miss Shaw for her design of the Tote bag. Students also decorated clay tiles and beads that will be threaded together as mobiles or a single drop thread. The touch football games were extremely popular and saw some remarkable tries scored. Another highlight of the week was the Bush Tukka lunch prepared by hospitality classes and served through the Bay Café. For three Baycoin students received a feed of Roo Stew, Lemon Myrtle Chicken, Sop-sop and damper. Thank you to Mrs Cruden for co-ordinating the whole school event and Ms Drysdale, Mrs Leighton, Ms Burtenshaw, Mrs Stickler for managing their classes to prepare and cook the food, and to Aunty Deb for her damper making expertise.
Our very busy NAIDOC concluded with an Elders’ Lunch where members from our community who support our school and students were acknowledged and thanked; all attendees received a “Keep the Fire Burning” tote bag painted by students during the week. Mrs Cruden’s classes prepared a delicious lunch that focused on traditional ingredients. Thanks for everyone who participated in some way to making this DBay NAIDOC week the best we have ever had.

SET Plan - Current Year 9 and 10 Save the Date
SAVE THE DATE!
SET Planning days are essential for a student's career education journey, ensuring they stay on track for success in their senior secondary years, post-school education, and work. Through this process, students identify their learning goals and are supported in developing their SET plan.
A 30-minute interview with students currently in Year 9 and 10, parents/caregivers, and a school representative will discuss subject options for their next year’s senior schooling.
Bookings for SET Plan interviews will be open in Week 6!
Year 9 and 10 parents/caregivers will receive email notifications from Compass when bookings are open which will include more information.
We recommend downloading the Compass app for easier management of bookings and to follow your child's progress.
Stay tuned and get ready for an exciting future!
