Principal's Welcome
What a fantastic welcome I have experienced since arriving at Deception Bay SHS! I have enjoyed meeting staff, students and parents across the last few weeks as well as learning the “ways of working” for our school.
In my first address to the school assembly, I spoke about my beliefs on the role of education to provide young people with the tools for achieving freedom in their lives. That is freedom to:
- Live where they want
- Live with who they want
- Live how they want
This notion of freedom includes the goal of financial independence and though this, a higher quality of life.
I outlined that educators work in partnership with students and families to achieve these outcomes. We are on the same team. Sometimes it may seem like we are asking a lot of young people, however it is through having high expectations that we see improvements in performance.
I also spoke to students about my priority to ensure both physical and psychological safety of students and staff whilst at school. Without this feeling of safety, we cannot achieve our vison to empower learners for the future. We have many layers of support for students to seek assistance to deal with misunderstandings that invariably occur between people. I have made it clear that resorting to physical violence is not justifiable at any time.
One of the most enjoyable aspects has been interacting with the students, it has been particularly noticeable in the authentic way in which they have welcomed me. This includes conversations about learning through class room visits, chatting with students during break times and the respect shown when addressing assemblies. I have truly appreciated this
I am excited and honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead Deception Bay SHS and am looking forward to continuing the great work that has gone before me.
ANZAC Day
Our students represented their school at several ANZAC services this year.
Starting with our school service at assembly on Monday, 22nd April, DBSHS Voices of the Bay and Concert Band both performed the Anthems and the hymn, Abide with Me. Lucille (Y8) and Sibella (Y9) did a wonderful job performing the Last Post and Reveille despite their nerves. On Wednesday, 24th April, the Concert Band and select Voices of the Bay Y10 students then performed at the Seabrook Aged Care ANZAC Service.
On Thursday, 25th April, students from the school then marched alongside the Marching Drum students in the Deception Bay Community ANZAC March. The Concert Band and Voices of the Bay students also represented our school community by performing at this event. A member of the community was so impressed by DBSHS student that they email through saying '[DBSHS's] contribution added to the service in a respectful, caring and mature manner.'
Performing Arts Camp - Expression of Interest
Expression of Interest forms have now been collected and closed for the upcoming Performing Arts Camp. Any further forms received after Week 5 will be added to a waitlist. Students will meet this week and receive further information regarding the payment schedule and medical forms.
Year 9 News
The Year 9 focus for term 2 is to ensure that students are attending all classes. We have challenged students to increase their attendance as a LFL class.
After a very successful Colour Run, year 9’s will have the opportunity to have "Fun Friday’s" session added into our LFL lessons to encourage students to be active with their classes whilst having a fun time.
In Week 2 students attended a performance by Brainstorm Productions that challenged students to reflect on cyber bullying, values and the responsible use of technology. The performance highlighted the importance of personal responsibility, empathy, respect, and resilience in the online world.
Year 12 News
What a fantastic start to the Senior Year it has been for the Class of 2024! Participating in their last ever Colour Run was an unforgettable experience.
Formal fundraising has also seen some incredible success. I want to personally thank every member of the Formal Committee for their hard work and dedication to running these events to ultimately enhancing their formal experience. We raised over $1000 in Term 1 by running plenty of successful events including Voting Day Sausage Sizzle, Valentine’s Day fundraiser, Easter fundraiser and Harmony Week multicultural food sale.
The School Captains and DBSHS students represented our school with pride at the ANZAC day ceremony and dawn service. Thank you to Natasha Tukuaoga for presenting the Youth Perspective. The 2024 cohort continues to impress me daily.
In the Term 1 reporting juncture we had 52 students achieve both EPA and BPA of 4.0+. This means that they are maintaining grades of Very Good and/or Excellent across all subjects. I encourage all Year 12 students to keep up the hard work ensuring they remain Green Students of Good Standing to ensure they are on track to attend both Formal and Graduation at the end of the year.

Clontarf Beach SHS Volleyball Friendly Volleyball Game
On Friday, 3rd May, Deception Bay SHS VDP invited Clontarf Beach SHS to an afternoon of friendly volleyball matches across all divisions (junior boys and girls, intermediate boys and girls and open boys and girls) hosted in the Deception Bay gym. Parents, carers and friends were all invited to attend this event and VDP was fortunate to have close to 200 people involved! Mr Flanders and Miss Hall-Stocker want to thank everyone involved and congratulate the students from Clontarf Beach SHS and Deception Bay SHS for their sportsmanship and behaviour. We look forward to organising another friendly in the future.
Junior and Senior Sport - Summer Season Results
Summer sport is over for all junior and senior teams and what a fantastic start to the year. All students involved consistently demonstrated sportsmanship and team work. A big thank you to all our teachers involved in sport, it would not be possible without you. Congratulations students on an excellent season!
Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod
In week 4, Junior and Senior Dance Troupe students competed in their first competition for the year. Students had been working hard alongside Ms Opacic, Ms Hamlin and Ms Scott over the last few weeks to polish their routines. The competition was incredibly strong with a wide range of private and state schools represented. Despite not placing, students performed incredibly well achieving very high marks with great feedback from the adjudicator. Well done to all students involved for your continued hard work and always striving to achieve your best.
